Understanding joint attention and its role in your child’s speech development

Have you ever pointed at something interesting and noticed your child look at the object and then back at you? That shared focus is called joint attention. It is an important part of early social communication and language development.

Children learn language through meaningful interactions with people and their environment. For some children with autism, joint attention may develop differently. They may find it difficult to follow another person’s pointing or gaze, show an object to someone else, or shift their attention between a person and an object.

Learning through play

How therapists encourage shared attention

Speech-language pathologists can use play-based activities to encourage joint attention. Interesting toys, songs, movement activities, and predictable routines naturally invite children and adults to share an experience.

Everyday opportunities

What you can try at home

01 · Follow their interests
Start with what your child enjoys instead of immediately redirecting them.
02 · Join the activity
If your child is fascinated by a toy, play alongside them and talk about what they are doing.
03 · Share and describe
Bring an interesting object near your face to invite your child to look between you and the object. Describe the moment using simple language.
